Apple iPhone X Overview
The Apple iPhone X introduced a new iPhone design with a 5.8-inch Super Retina OLED display, Face ID facial recognition and a dual 12MP rear camera system. Released in 2017, it replaced the traditional Home button with an edge-to-edge display and gesture-based navigation.
Powered by the Apple A11 Bionic chip, the iPhone X features 3GB RAM, 64GB or 256GB of internal storage, 4G LTE connectivity and a 7MP TrueDepth front camera. Its dual rear cameras include a Wide lens and a Telephoto lens with 2x optical zoom, both equipped with optical image stabilisation.
The iPhone X also supports 4K video recording at up to 60fps, Qi wireless charging, fast wired charging and IP67 dust and water resistance. Available in Space Gray and Silver, it features a glass body with a stainless steel frame. The phone originally launched with iOS 11 and supports major software upgrades through iOS 16.
Apple iPhone X Features
5.8-inch Super Retina OLED Display
The iPhone X features a 5.8-inch Super Retina HD OLED display with a resolution of 2436 x 1125 pixels and approximately 458 pixels per inch. Its OLED technology delivers deep blacks, strong contrast and detailed images.
The display supports HDR10, Dolby Vision, True Tone and wide colour (P3). True Tone adjusts the screen's colour temperature to match surrounding lighting, while HDR support improves the presentation of compatible high-dynamic-range content.
The screen also supports 3D Touch, which provides additional controls through pressure-sensitive interactions in compatible parts of the interface.
Edge-to-Edge Design with Stainless Steel Frame
The iPhone X marked a major change in Apple's smartphone design by replacing the traditional Home button with a larger screen and gesture-based navigation.
Its construction combines a glass front, glass back and stainless steel frame. Measuring 143.6 x 70.9 x 7.7mm and weighing 174g, the phone offers a 5.8-inch display without the larger body dimensions of earlier Plus-sized iPhones.
Apple A11 Bionic Processor
The iPhone X is powered by the Apple A11 Bionic chipset, built using a 10-nanometre process. It features a six-core CPU and Apple's three-core graphics processor.
The A11 Bionic supports everyday functions such as calling, messaging, web browsing, video playback and compatible applications. It also provides the processing capabilities needed for Face ID, camera features and augmented reality applications supported by the device.
Because the iPhone X is an older-generation smartphone, demanding modern applications may have performance or software compatibility limitations.
Dual 12MP Rear Cameras with 2x Optical Zoom
The iPhone X features a dual-camera system consisting of a 12MP Wide camera and a 12MP Telephoto camera.
- 12MP Wide Camera: Features an f/1.8 aperture, phase detection autofocus and optical image stabilisation for reducing blur caused by camera movement.
- 12MP Telephoto Camera: Features an f/2.4 aperture, optical image stabilisation and 2x optical zoom for capturing subjects with a narrower field of view.
The camera system supports Portrait mode, Portrait Lighting, HDR photography, Live Photos and panorama photography. Portrait mode allows background blur to be applied to supported photographs, while Portrait Lighting provides additional lighting effects.
Dual Optical Image Stabilisation
Both rear cameras on the iPhone X feature optical image stabilisation. This helps compensate for small hand movements during photography and video recording.
Optical image stabilisation is particularly useful when using the Telephoto camera, where camera shake can become more noticeable. Image quality still depends on available light, subject movement and shooting conditions.
4K Video Recording at up to 60fps
The iPhone X supports 4K video recording at 24, 30 and 60 frames per second. It also records 1080p Full HD video at 30fps or 60fps.
Slow-motion recording is available at 1080p resolution with frame rates of 120fps or 240fps. Video features include optical image stabilisation, continuous autofocus and time-lapse recording with stabilisation.
7MP TrueDepth Front Camera
The iPhone X includes a 7MP TrueDepth front camera with an f/2.2 aperture. It supports HDR photography, Portrait mode, Portrait Lighting and 1080p video recording at 30fps.
The TrueDepth camera system also includes depth-sensing components used for Face ID and Apple's original Animoji features.
Face ID Facial Recognition
The iPhone X was the first iPhone to introduce Face ID, replacing Touch ID fingerprint recognition with facial authentication.
Face ID uses the TrueDepth camera system to recognise the registered user's face. It supports unlocking the phone, authenticating compatible applications and approving supported payments.
The iPhone X does not have a fingerprint sensor or physical Home button.
64GB and 256GB Storage Options
The Apple iPhone X was released in two internal storage configurations:
- 64GB internal storage with 3GB RAM
- 256GB internal storage with 3GB RAM
Both configurations use NVMe storage technology. The iPhone X does not include a microSD card slot, so its internal storage cannot be expanded with a memory card.
4G LTE Mobile Connectivity
The iPhone X supports 4G LTE for mobile internet connectivity, alongside 3G and 2G network technologies where available.
The device uses a single physical Nano-SIM and does not support eSIM or 5G networks. Mobile network compatibility and available LTE bands depend on the regional model and network operator.
2716mAh Battery and Fast Charging
The iPhone X has a built-in 2716mAh lithium-ion battery. Apple's original battery estimates include up to 21 hours of wireless talk time, up to 13 hours of video playback and up to 60 hours of audio playback.
The phone supports fast wired charging through its Lightning connector. Apple originally rated the device for approximately 50% charge in 30 minutes when used with a compatible USB-C Power Delivery adapter and cable.
Actual battery life depends on usage, network conditions, settings and battery health. On older or pre-owned devices, remaining battery capacity may be lower than the original manufacturer's rating.
Qi Wireless Charging
The iPhone X supports Qi wireless charging, allowing the battery to be charged using a compatible wireless charging pad.
Wireless charging accessories are sold separately unless specifically included with the device. The iPhone X does not support Apple's later MagSafe magnetic charging system.
IP67 Dust and Water Resistance
The iPhone X has an IP67 rating under IEC standard 60529, indicating laboratory-tested resistance to dust and water immersion at depths of up to 1 metre for 30 minutes.
Water resistance is not permanent and can decrease through age, wear or repairs. The original IP67 rating should not be treated as a guarantee that a previously used device remains water-resistant.
Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.0 and NFC
The iPhone X supports dual-band Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac and Bluetooth 5.0 for compatible wireless accessories.
It also features NFC for supported contactless functions, including Apple Pay where available. GPS, GLONASS, Galileo and QZSS provide positioning and navigation support.
Stereo Speakers and Lightning Connectivity
The iPhone X features stereo speakers for audio playback and uses a Lightning connector for charging and data transfer.
There is no built-in 3.5mm headphone jack. Compatible Lightning headphones, adapters or Bluetooth audio accessories can be used instead.
iOS 16 Software Support
The iPhone X originally launched with iOS 11 and supports major operating system upgrades through iOS 16. It does not support iOS 17 or later major versions.
Apple has released iOS 16 security updates for supported older devices, but some modern applications and newer iOS features may require a more recent iPhone.
Customers planning to use particular banking, payment, business or other applications should check their minimum iOS requirements before choosing this model.
